Convenience stores — called コンビニ — are everywhere in Japan. You’ll visit them almost every day. In this lesson, you’ll learn the simple phrases you need to buy something, answer the cashier’s questions, and complete a real purchase in Japanese.

2. Phrase Notes ／ ポイント
① これをください ／ これをお願いします
Both mean “This, please.” これをください is simple and direct. これをお願いします is slightly more polite. For beginners, これをください is easy to remember and works everywhere — you can just point to the item.
② これとこれをください ／ これもください
To buy two things, say これとこれをください (“this and this, please”). You can also add items one by one with これもください (“this too, please”).
③ 袋は要りますか — the bag question
In Japan, plastic bags cost extra and cashiers always ask. If you need one: はい、お願いします。 If you don’t: いいえ、大丈夫です。

④ お支払いは？— How to pay
When asked お支払いは？ (“How would you like to pay?”), answer with:

⑤ ポイントカードはありますか
Many convenience stores have point cards. If you don’t have one, simply say いいえ、ありません。 (“No, I don’t.”)
⚠️ Common Mistake
Don’t confuse 大丈夫です and お願いします. 大丈夫です means “No, thank you / it’s okay.” お願いします means “Yes, please.” Using the wrong one at the register will give you the opposite of what you want!
