Before You Start
Many journeys in Japan require a transfer — getting off one train and boarding another at a different platform. Knowing how to ask about transfers and find the right platform is the difference between a smooth journey and a stressful one. 2. Phrase Notes ／ ポイント
① 乗り換え — what it means and why it matters
乗り換え literally means “ride change” — getting off one train and boarding another. Many destinations in Japan require at least one transfer. The first thing to ask is whether a transfer is needed at all.
② 何番ホームですか — platform numbers
何番 = “what number.” Platform numbers are displayed on signs throughout the station. The answer is: 〇番ホームです. Echo it back to confirm: 3番ホームですね (“Platform 3, right?”).
③ このホームで大丈夫ですか — the platform confirmation
When you are already on a platform but unsure, ask このホームで大丈夫ですか. If wrong, staff will say: このホームではありません。〇番ホームです.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Don’t confuse 何番ホームですか (which platform number?) with ホームはどこですか (where is the platform?). The first gets you a number; the second gets you a direction. Both are useful — use whichever fits your situation.
