You’ve found your seat — now comes the best part. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to order food and drinks at any Japanese restaurant or café, from pointing at the menu to telling staff your complete order and finishing with 以上です.

2. Phrase Notes ／ ポイント
① 〇〇をお願いします — the core ordering pattern
This pattern works for everything. Replace 〇〇 with the name of any food or drink. You can also say 〇〇をください — both mean the same thing, but お願いします is considered slightly more polite in restaurant settings.
② これをお願いします — the beginner’s secret weapon
If you can’t read the menu, just point at the item and say これをお願いします. Japanese menus often have photos — this technique works every time, and no one will think less of you for using it.
③ Ordering two items — use と
Link two items with と (and). You can add more items the same way.
カレーとサラダをお願いします。Curry and salad, please.
ラーメンと水をお願いします。Ramen and water, please.
コーヒーとケーキをお願いします。Coffee and cake, please.
④ Hot or iced — ホット / アイス
Cafés will often ask ホットですか、アイスですか (“Hot or iced?”). Just answer with ホットでお願いします or アイスでお願いします.
⑤ 以上です — ending your order cleanly
以上です signals that your order is complete. It’s polite and saves the staff from asking “Is that all?” You can add it right after your last item.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Don’t confuse まだです (“not yet”) and 以上です (“that’s all”). Saying 以上です before you’re done ordering will make the staff stop taking your order! Always say 以上です at the very end.

FAQ
Q. What is the difference between 〇〇をお願いします and 〇〇をください?
Both mean “Please give me 〇〇.” お願いします is slightly more polite and is the preferred form in restaurant settings. ください is more direct and works equally well in casual situations. As a rule: use お願いします at restaurants and cafés.
Q. What does かしこまりました mean, and when do I hear it?
かしこまりました is the very formal version of “certainly” — you’ll hear it from staff at restaurants, hotels, and high-end shops after you make a request. You don’t need to use it yourself, but knowing it means your order was accepted.
Q. How do I call the staff when I’m ready to order?
Say すみません while making eye contact or gently raising your hand. In many Japanese restaurants there is also a call button on the table — press it and the staff will come to you. Avoid shouting across the room, as this is considered impolite.
