Before You Start
Knowing how to tell the time is essential in Japan — for appointments, work, school, and daily routines. In this lesson, you’ll learn to say the time and talk about your daily schedule.
What you’ll learn:
- Ask “What time is it?” — 今、何時ですか
- Say the time — 〇時です / 〇時半です
- Say a.m. and p.m. — 午前 / 午後
- Say what time you do something — 〇時に起きます

4時 = よじ (yo-ji) — not よんじ · 9時 = くじ (ku-ji) — not きゅうじ
3. Phrase Notes / ポイント
7時に起きます = I wake up AT 7. (action at a time)
Key rule: add に after the time when there is an action.
午前9時 = 9 a.m. · 午後3時 = 3 p.m.
食べます = eat ·
行きます = go ·
帰ります = go home ·
寝ます = sleep
Don’t confuse 7時です (stating the time — “It is 7”) and 7時に起きます (doing something at a time — “I wake up at 7”). When you say when you do something, always add に.

今 = now, 何時 = what time. いくら = price / どこ = place.
Q2. How do you say “It is 7:30”?
半 (han) = half. 7時半 = 7:30. 人 = people / 円 = yen — these are different counters.

起きます = wake up. 寝ます = sleep / 食べます = eat. Pattern: 〇時に + verb.
