人を数える時は「3人」と言いますが、犬のような小さい動物を数える時は「3人」とは言いません。
「3匹」といいます。

同じように、細長いものは「本」、水やコーヒーなどは「杯」、薄いものは「枚」、機械などは「台」を使います。
