人を数える時は「3人」と言いますが、犬のような小さい動物を数える時は「3人」とは言いません。
「3匹」といいます。

同じように、細長いものは「本」、水やコーヒーなどは「杯」、薄いものは「枚」、機械などは「台」を使います。
日本語では、数える対象によって、数の言い方が変わります。

クッション言葉を使いましょう
Use cushion words
クッションとなる言葉をつけると相手に優しく伝わります。
If you add a cushioning word, it will gently convey the message to the other person.

いいにくいんだけど
よかったら
悪いけど
今いいですか?
せっかくだけど
相手の気持ちを考えると、なかなか言い出せないこともありますよね。そんなときには、クッション言葉が有効です。
